Every X-Men Character Recast For Deadpool & Wolverine
Summary
- Fox created several X-Men projects over 20 years, including spin-offs, reboots, and trilogies.
- Multiple actors reprised their roles, but some characters were portrayed by new actors, like Psylocke.
- Deadpool & Wolverine featured a blend of different characters from Fox X-Men timelines, including characters like Blob and Gambit.
One of the highlights of Deadpool & Wolverine was the beautiful send-off it gave to previous X-Men movies, but not every actor from the Fox universe was able to reprise their roles. The rights for many Marvel projects were optioned out to other studios during the 1990s, which led to several Marvel movies popping up from different Hollywood studios. Universal had Hulk, Sony had, and continues to have, the rights to Spider-Man, and Fox had the X-Men. Obviously, these studios pushed each to create their own films with the characters to various degrees of success.
While Spider-Man may appear to be the most successful and popular, at least on the surface, Fox managed to do a lot with X-Men in a 20-year period. In 2000, they released their first X-Men movie, featuring incredible talent, such as Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, and, of course, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. They then went on to create an original trilogy, a rebooted set of four X-Men movies, a Wolverine trilogy, and a spin-off with The New Mutants. And while Deadpool & Wolverine said goodbye to the Fox universe, not everyone got to return for the farewell feature.

Psylocke possesses slightly different powers in either timeline. In the original timeline, the character was played by Mei Melançon and can be seen as a member of Magneto's team in X-Men: The Last Stand. In that film, her powers allow her to teleport in shadows, in a way that is not entirely dissimilar to Nightcrawler. In the revised timeline, Psylocke is played by Olivia Munn, and she appears in X-Men: Apocalypse as one of Apocalypse's four horsemen.
Munn's Psylocke also possesses abilities that are more similar to her comic book counterpart, with psionic powers that allow her to summon pure energy weapons to fight with. This is also similar to the version seen in Deadpool & Wolverine, who wields powerful energy blades. However, neither Munn nor Melançon returned to play the character, with a stunt actress stepping up to the role instead. Ayesha Hussain has appeared in numerous projects on the stunt team, and in Deadpool 3, she had a chance to shine as Psylocke.
6 Lady Deathstrike Played By Jade Lye In X-Men 2, Logan attempts to uncover parts of his past, and is faced by the menacing figure who performed terrible painful experiments on him to turn him into a weapon, William Stryker. During his attempts to track down Stryker and get clarity on his foggy memories, he comes face to face with a mutant who had several abilities in common with him, Lady Deathstrike. Lady Deathstrike had long adamantium claws, and a rapid healing factor which made her a near perfect match for Wolverine, although he did manage to overpower her in the end.
In X-Men 2, Lady Deathstrike is played by Kelly Hu, who is only seen in that movie. However, when Lady Deathstrike appears in Deadpool & Wolverine as part of Cassandra Nova's crew of castaways, a new actress took up the role. Jade Lye, another professional stuntwoman, is the actress who appears as Lady Deathstrike in the movie, and despite the non-speaking role, she remains an impressive and intimidating figure in the film.
5 Blob Played By Mike Waters Blob is another character who appears in both two branches of the Fox X-Men timeline, although he appears in the Wolverine trilogy and the revised timeline. The character possesses incredible strength and durability, with the side effect of being somewhat blob like in their appearance. In X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the character is played by Kevin Durand. Then, in X-Men: Apocalypse, the character is seen again, but on this occasion, they are played by Giant Gustav Claude Ouimet. Both actors manage to deliver a very similar portrayal of the character at two different points in their timeline.
In Deadpool & Wolverine, the character returns, although this variant is a part of Cassandra's gang as well. Neither of the previous actors returned to play Blob, with the role being played by Mike Waters in the threequel instead. Waters is an actor with very few credits to his name to date, although he did previously appear in several wrestling events, where he used the stage name, Bulk. This name is not far off from Blob, and could have been a part of what landed him the role, as he already had some things in common with the character.

4 Callisto Uncredited Callisto is a pivotal character from the original X-Men trilogy who appears for the first and last time in X-Men: The Last Stand. When Magneto is searching for other mutants to join him and rise up against the humans, he finds a sizable group of mutants led by Callisto. Callisto's powers allow her to detect and assess other mutants' powers, categorizing them by how powerful they are. The character was played by Dania Ramirez, who made the character so much more than a simple mutant detector, and became a central figure in Magneto's army.
In Deadpool & Wolverine, it appears that the character has had a significant downgrade in terms of position, as she now fights on the frontlines with the rest of Cassandra Nova's lackeys. The character is also played by a new actress, although they are not clearly identified in the credits. Presumably, considering the role was ultimately more physical than anything else, it is likely that they were also played by a member of the stunt team who had a somewhat similar appearance to Ramirez.
3 Toad Played By Daniel Medina Ramos Toad is one of the most unusual mutants, due to his physical mutation, and his abilities, which all combine to make them appear and behave far more like a Toad. This is a clear connection to the name that the mutant was given, but they also manage to create a significant threat due to their acrobatic skills and toxic spit. In the original trilogy, Toad is played by Ray Park, who also played Darth Maul in Star Wars. Then, in X-Men: Days of Future Past, the character is played by a younger actor to fit with the earlier setting, Evan Jonigkeit.
While Toad does have a slightly more prominent role in Deadpool & Wolverine, with the character being shown multiple times in the first half of the film, they also have no speaking lines. With this in mind, the role was handed off to Daniel Medina Ramos, who is also uncredited in the film. Once again, Medina Ramos is also a stunt performer, who has appeared in numerous large projects, including a previous MCU movie, The Marvels.

1 2 Juggernaut Played By Aaron W Reed Juggernaut is one of the most formidable villains in the X-Men franchise, and as such, they have been seen in multiple Fox X-Men projects. However, it is worth pointing out that Juggernaut was also featured in an earlier Deadpool movie, Deadpool 2, played by a different actor. Initially, the character was brought to the big screen by Vinnie Jones in X-Men: The Last Stand, but when they returned in Deadpool 2, they had a new face and voice. The more recent version of the character was performed by David Leitch. However, the voice and face of the gigantic mutant was Ryan Reynolds himself.
Unfortunately for fans of the Reynolds twist, the character in Deadpool & Wolverine has been largely overhauled. Rather than a hulking giant, the character is more normally proportioned, with a healthy dose of incredible physique. The role is played by Aaron W Reed, who also appeared in Free Guy. Reed has a few more acting credits under his belt, and unlike many of the other mutants in Deadpool & Wolverine, his character has several lines and an important part in the battle between the rebels of the void, and Cassandra Nova.
1 Gambit Played By Channing Tatum Gambit is a fan-favorite X-Man who appears prominently in the animated shows, but had a much smaller presence in the films. However, in 2009s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Remy LeBeau is given a prominent role. The playing card wielding hero becomes an unlikely ally to Logan when he comes seeking help to get to Stryker Island. The character is played by Taylor Kitsch, who is one of the most successful actors on this list with leading roles in several movies and TV shows. However, he only had one movie where he played Gambit.
In Deadpool & Wolverine, the film uses the opportunity to bring back Gambit in a much more prominent and satisfying way when they cast Channing Tatum in the role. Tatum was initially tipped to star as Gambit in a solo movie all the way back in 2014. However, several issues and delays meant that the movie kept being pushed back until it was ultimately canceled. Now, a decade after that announcement, Tatum finally got to don a comic-accurate outfit and mesmerize audiences with his performance as the incredible hero when he appeared prominently in Deadpool & Wolverine as one of the core rebellion fighters in the void.
