Deadpool & Wolverine"s Scarlet Witch Reference Is An Insult To The MCU Return I Wanted
Warning! This article contains spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine
Summary
- Deadpool & Wolverine features a subtle Scarlet Witch cameo, hinting at her permanent demise in the MCU.
- The movie's many references include a monument to Wanda, symbolizing her tragic end in the franchise.
- Hopefully, future MCU projects will bring Scarlet Witch back to redeem her past and give her a happy ending.
One blink-and-you'll-miss-it scene in Deadpool & Wolverine made a reference to Scarlet Witch and doubled as an insult to the MCU return I still think she deserves. Deadpool & Wolverine has been enjoying an incredible amount of hype since its release, even going so far as to break the world record for the biggest box office gross in an opening weekend for any R-rated movie. The win couldn't come at a more crucial time for Marvel Studios, which has struggled to regain its sturdy footing with a new roster of heroes after setting aside several of its more financially reliable ones.
One such hero is Scarlet Witch, an MCU icon who has made an indelible mark on the franchise. Since debuting in Avengers: Age of Ultron as a sympathetic MCU villain who switched sides to join the Avengers, Wanda Maximoff has undergone one of the most tragic character arcs in the entire MCU before it ended with yet more villainy and Wanda's swift demise. I know I'm not alone in thinking that this death and its lead-up were not what Wanda deserved – but Deadpool & Wolverine just twisted the dagger with how it featured Wanda in the cameo-rife movie.
Related Deadpool & Wolverine: 100 Marvel Easter Eggs & References Explained Deadpool & Wolverine quite literally has over 100 different Easter eggs, references, and cameos galore. Here are all the ones we found.
8 Deadpool & Wolverine's Scarlet Witch Cameo Makes Her Death Seem More Permanent Than Ever Close Deadpool & Wolverine's countless cameos are largely to thank for the success it has enjoyed since release. Shock reveals that Jennifer Garner's Elektra, Wesley Snipes' Blade, and Channing Tatum's Gambit were certainly welcome, but the hideout in which they were revealed came with a sting in its tail. Specifically, it featured a shot of Wanda's monument last seen in the very same Mount Wundagore that seemingly crushed Wanda in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It did not, however, feature Earth-616's Wanda or a Wanda variant among the many variants in the void.
Wanda's death was ostensibly self-inflicted as she pulled Darkhold Castle down around herself in order to destroy the Darkhold.
Wanda's absence isn't particularly shocking, as she was hardly among the characters most expected to reprise their roles in Deadpool & Wolverine. Nevertheless, including a statue of Wanda simply works as a reminder that she is dead, crushed by the very same statue that was presumably included in Deadpool & Wolverine to suggest that Wundagore's magic is protecting the resistance from Cassandra Nova's investigations. This theory was never confirmed in the movie, however, and I'm simply remaining hopeful that this was why Wanda's statue was included, as I place my faith in her imminent MCU return.
Marvel Better Be Bringing Back Scarlet Witch After This Close To feature Wanda's statue as a reminder of her MCU absence would feel particularly egregious. Instead, I'm hoping the MCU follows this with a vindication of the myriad theories that suggest Scarlet Witch will reemerge in a future MCU project – starting with Agatha All Along. The trailer for the upcoming WandaVision successor already featured what appears to be Wanda's corpse, after all, and the entire mystical narrative surrounding the Witch's Road carries positive implications. Agatha All Along may be where Wanda is finally revived, especially if certain rumors are to be believed.
Failing that, there are still plenty of other projects that could bring Wanda back. Vision's solo series, and upcoming projects that surround the MCU's mystical side, such as Blade, and Doctor Strange 3 are some of the foremost contenders. Failing that, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars have great potential to reunite several MCU stalwarts. Whatever happens, I just hope that Wanda gets the happy ending she deserves after redeeming her past sins, even if Deadpool & Wolverine ultimately wasn't the place for it.
Deadpool & Wolverine 4.0 R A follow-up to the highly successful Deadpool and Deadpool 2 films starring Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth. The third film will be the first in the franchise to be developed under the Marvel Studios banner following Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox.
