Chris Hemsworth"s MCU Return Comments Have Me Worried About Marvel"s Plans For Thor 5
Summary
- Thor 5 is likely to follow Avengers: Doomsday, complicating its storyline.
- Chris Hemsworth would love to return to the MCU as Thor for more movies.
- Thor's potential sacrifice in Thor 5 could help up the stakes for Avengers: Secret Wars.
After Chris Hemsworth's new Marvel Cinematic Universe return comments, I'm worried Marvel has plans for a major event to happen in Thor 5. Hemsworth is currently the MCU actor with the most solo movies, with Tom Holland joining him at four solo movies whenever his Spider-Man 4 gets going. Hemsworth's Thor movies have not been all hits, with director Taika Waititi turning the character and the franchise around with Thor: Ragnarok, only for the hero's next solo movie, Thor: Love and Thunder, to turn out a confusing clash of tones that disappointed most MCU fans.
I was among those who expected Thor: Love and Thunder to be way better than it was. While I was disappointed by Hemsworth's latest solo outing, I remain confident that he can again turn things around for the character, as long as Thor 5's story goes for a more serious tone for the hero this time around. Following a new reveal, I now think Marvel could be going toward that tone with a major event taking place in Thor 5; however, I would like to be wrong about what I think it means.

2 Thor 5's Current Status Means It's Unlikely To Happen Before Avengers: Doomsday The Avengers Movie Is Coming Together Quickly Close At San Diego Comic-Con to promote his new movie Transformers One, Hemsworth spoke to ComicBook.com’s Phase Zero about returning to the MCU in the near future.
Hemsworth was asked if he thought he would come back to SDCC first for Thor 5 or Avengers: Doomsday. According to the MCU actor, he has "loved every second of working in the Marvel universe" and would be excited to return if there is more on the way. However, Hemsworth said that there is "nothing official yet" regarding a return for Thor 5 or Avengers: Doomsday.
Based on Hemsworth's MCU return comments, there is still no concrete timeline for Thor 5. As such, it is impossible for the movie to be released before Avengers: Doomsday. The next Avengers movie was recently announced at San Diego Comic-Con, with the Russo Brothers, who worked with Hemsworth in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, coming back to helm Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. Shockingly, Robert Downey Jr. will play Doctor Doom in the movies. As Avengers: Doomsday has a story, directors, and star set, with the movie confirmed to start production in early 2025, Thor 5 will be released after it.

1 Thor 5 Happening After Avengers 5 Complicates Its Story Thor: Love And Thunder Set Up A Major Fight Close Thor: Love and Thunder's ending sets up the natural story for Thor 5. The God of Thunder is now raising Gorr the God Butcher's daughter, Love, as his own. Both go on fights together and live on a beach. However, they should be getting a visit in the future from a very angry and powerful character. After Thor stole Zeus' Thunderbolt in Thor: Love and Thunder, Russel Crowe's character sent his son, Brett Goldstein's Hercules, after Thor to get revenge for Hemsworth's MCU hero having humiliated him.
If Thor 5 really does release after Avengers: Doomsday, then the Hercules tease will have been four or five years in the making before finally coming to life, which takes away all the momentum from the reveal. However, there is an even worse scenario, as any possible major universe shifts that happen in Avengers: Doomsday would have to be reflected by Thor 5, which could very well lead to the Hercules story being resolved quickly, dropped, or completely ignored. With RDJ returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom, Hemsworth's Thor should also play a role in Avengers: Doomsday.

Setting Thor 5 After Avengers: Doomsday Makes The MCU Hero Death Theories More Possible I Fear For Thor's Life Close When Thor 5 comments started emerging, I wasn't necessarily afraid of Hemsworth's character dying in the movie, as I always expected that Marvel would bring back the hero for the next two Avengers movies. However, with Thor 5 most likely coming after the release of Avengers: Doomsday, I feel that makes things less safe for the God of Thunder. Thor will already have helped the new Avengers establish themselves and take the fight to RDJ's Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, which could lead to a more personal Thor 5 that ends the hero's MCU journey.
If Thor 5 were to kill off the God of Thunder, then Earth's Mightiest Heroes would lose one of their biggest weapons in the fight against Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom in Avengers: Secret Wars. That is why I think Marvel would be willing to kill Hemsworth's character in Thor 5. The hero could solve his dispute with Hercules and then spend the rest of the movie defending New Asgard from either those on Earth against aliens following Secret Invasion's ending or perhaps villains sent by Doom. Thor 5 featuring the hero's sacrifice to save his people would be fitting.
Thor 5 Thor 5 continues Chris Hemsworth's MCU journey as the Asgardian God of Thunder. It follows the events of Taika Waititi's Thor: Love and Thunder, where the hero visited Omnipotence City and tried to kill Zeus (Russell Crowe), and its post-credits scene, where the Greek deity orders his son, Brett Goldstein's Olympian demigod Hercules, to exact revenge.
Avengers: Doomsday Avengers: Doomsday is the fifth Avengers film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will bring together heroes, new and old, to face off against Victor von Doom – played by the returning Robert Downey Jr. Avengers 5 will also mark the beginning of phase 6 of the MCU.
