Deadpool & Wolverine"s Unused Avengers Crossover Plan Would Have Been The MCU"s Across The Spider-Verse
Summary
- New concept art from Deadpool & Wolverine shows Deadpool traveling to an animated, Marvel Comics-inspired universe to join the Avengers.
- The animated Avengers are drawn in the styles of some of Marvel Comics' most notable artists, including Jack Kirby, Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld.
- It would have been great to see Deadpool crossover into animation, just as Doctor Strange and America Chavez did in Phase 4, but in a very different way to Sony's Spider-Verse movies.
Marvel Studios' original Avengers team almost made an appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine, and this would have put a great animated twist on Wade Wilson's MCU debut. Deadpool & Wolverine has quickly become one of Marvel's most beloved installments, and quickly beat 2019's Joker to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. This huge level of success proves just how good a job director Shawn Levy and lead star Ryan Reynolds did in bringing Wade Wilson's Deadpool into the MCU, but they almost pushed this even further.
Deadpool & Wolverine included many references to the MCU's Earth-616, as Deadpool himself was offered the opportunity to move from Fox's Earth-10005 to the safety of the Sacred Timeline. Prior to this offer, Wade Wilson traveled to 2018's Earth-616, in the months before Infinity War, to meet with Happy Hogan and ask for a spot in the Avengers team. Deadpool was denied this chance, but new concept art from Deadpool & Wolverine has been released which suggests Deadpool almost got his wish, though not how anyone expected.

Andy Park's Deadpool & Wolverine Plan Brought Deadpool Into An Animated Comic-Inspired Marvel Universe On August 22, Marvel Studios' Director of Visual Development Andy Park released previously-unseen concept art from Deadpool & Wolverine that shows that Deadpool almost got his spot in the Avengers team. However, instead of being the live-action Avengers team from the MCU's Phase 1, Deadpool would have found himself traveling to a reality inspired by Marvel Comics, meeting an animated version of the superhero team. This team featured Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye in the styles of different Marvel Comics artists.
While Deadpool is in the style of his co-creator Rob Liefeld, who got referenced many times in Deadpool & Wolverine, the other Avengers take on other styles of some of the most notable Marvel Comics illustrators. Tony Stark's Iron Man and Bruce Banner's Hulk reflected designs by Bob Layton, while Steve Rogers' Captain America was drawn in the style of Marvel legend Jack Kirby. Walter Simonson's art inspired Thor, while Jim Lee's art was reflected in Natasha Romanoff's Black Widow and Clint Barton's Hawkeye. It would have been incredible to see Deadpool team up with these comic-inspired Avengers.
Theories emerged prior to Deadpool & Wolverine's release that the Merc with a Mouth and the clawed mutant would journey through the MCU's history, but this didn't come to pass in the final cut of the Phase 5 movie. Andy Park's concept art suggests this was part of the plan, though these iconic MCU moments would have taken place in alternate universes, such as one inspired by Marvel Comics. This would have reflected previous Marvel movies, which have also bridged the gap between live-action and animation, and would have been a fun addition to Deadpool & Wolverine.

1 MCU’s Live-Action Heroes Can Still Crossover Into Animation & Vice Versa Interestingly, Andy Park's Deadpool & Wolverine concept art confirms that Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool would have taken on an animated, Marvel Comics-inspired style after traveling to this alternate reality. This retains continuity with previous MCU installments, most notably 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This Phase 4 movie explored the multiverse more than any other, and saw Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange and Xochitl Gomez's America Chavez travel through many realities, including an animated one.
Related Every Universe In The MCU Confirmed (So Far) Since the beginning of the MCU"s Multiverse Saga, many alternate universes have been introduced into Marvel Studios" live-action and animated stories.
On their multiversal journey, Doctor Strange and America Chavez briefly make their way into an animated universe, and their bodies change to fit the animation style. This same effect occurs when they transform into paint, cubes, or into a black-and-white monochromatic style. This, along with Deadpool & Wolverine's new concept art, suggests that live-action and animated universes can collide in the MCU, with the respective characters changing to fit the reality they're in. This is very different to what has been established in Sony's animated Spider-Verse franchise.
2023's Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse saw both animated and live-action characters cross over into different universes. Donald Glover's live-action Prowler found himself in the animated Spider Society, but was still depicted as being live-action, while the animated Spot made his way into Sony's Spider-Man Universe to meet Mrs. Chen, but remained in his animation style. In the MCU, however, live-action characters would become animated when crossing universe boundaries, which would be great to see capitalized on in the MCU's future.
Marvel Studios' animated What If…? series could have featured crossovers with the live-action MCU, though it's unclear whether the upcoming season 3 will take advantage of this.
Deadpool’s Animated Comic Journey Would Have Been The Perfect Homage To His Origins Close It would have been fantastic to see Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool spend an extended period of time with the original Avengers team of the Marvel Comics-inspired reality in Deadpool & Wolverine, not least because this would have seen his dream come true. On top of this being purely entertaining, this would have been a wonderful tribute to his Marvel Comics roots. Andy Park's concept art showcases Deadpool in the style of Rob Liefeld, who co-created the Merc with a Mouth with comic book writer Fabian Nicieza in the early 1990s.
Rob Liefeld has become one of the most notable Marvel Comics contributors thanks to his creation of Deadpool. Liefeld earned a number of references in Deadpool & Wolverine, including the "Just Feet" store, referring to Liefeld's legendary inability to draw feet properly, which was most evident in Deadpool. Deadpool joined Marvel Comics' Avengers team after 2015's Secret Wars event, but not the MCU's original line-up of the group. It would have been a brilliant development to see him interact with Captain America, Iron Man and others, as this may have been his only opportunity to do so.
