Summary

  • RDJ debunks theory of Doctor Doom being a Tony Stark variant, ensuring Iron Man's MCU legacy remains untainted.
  • Despite initial speculation, MCU's Doctor Doom will have no connection to Iron Man, confirmed by Downey Jr.
  • Thanos' line to Iron Man in Infinity War foreshadows similarities between Tony Stark and Doctor Doom.

There have been plenty of theories about the connection between Robert Downey Jr.’s MCU characters and how it will play out in Avengers: Doomsday, but the actor has recently debunked one of them. Out of Marvel’s iconic castings, the decision to bring Downey Jr. back to the MCU as Doctor Doom may be their biggest yet. Fans, and even Downey Jr. himself, believed that his time in the MCU was over after the death of Iron Man in Endgame. While the introduction of the villain Doctor Doom seemed inevitable, very few could’ve predicted that it would be Downey Jr. under the mask.
After the Doom casting was announced, many naturally assumed that Downey Jr.’s Victor Von Doom would be a Tony Stark variant. It seemed like that would be the only reason for the double casting and would make the most sense in the context of the Multiverse Saga. Some even rehashed a line that Thanos said to Tony Stark in Infinity War to further prove the variant theory. However, it’s looking more likely than ever that the casting choice is purely a coincidence and that the MCU’s Doctor Doom will have nothing to do with Iron Man.

2 RDJ's Comments Debunk Theories His Doctor Doom Is A Tony Stark Variant Tony Stark is a very special character to the MCU, and it makes sense that Downey Jr. would only agree to return to the franchise if it wouldn’t taint Iron Man’s legacy.
Downey Jr. recently appeared on The Hollywood Reporter’s “Awards Chatter” podcast to talk about his surprising Doctor Doom casting. He spoke about the conception of his Doctor Doom casting and the process of getting it done, but he most notably said that he'll be playing Victor Von Doom, not a version of Tony Stark who becomes Doom. Tony Stark is a very special character to the MCU, and it makes sense that Downey Jr. would only agree to return to the franchise if it wouldn’t taint Iron Man’s legacy.
Though fans theorized about Doctor Doom being an Iron Man variant after the initial casting, not everyone was on board with the idea. The Multiverse Saga has its ups and downs, especially since so many concepts use the lazy excuse of variants and alternate timelines to explain what would otherwise be illogical scenarios. Fans didn’t want Iron Man’s legacy to be tainted by that. Now that Downey Jr. has basically confirmed that he'll be playing Victor Von Doom, fans can rest assured that Doctor Doom will not be a Tony variant.
How Thanos Is Still Right About RDJ's Marvel Characters Close While Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom isn’t going to be an Iron Man variant, Thanos’ line about him in Infinity War still holds some truth. During the fight on Titan, Thanos tells Iron Man, "You’re not the only one cursed with knowledge." If the Doctor Doom variant was true, it would’ve made the line hold a lot more weight. Victor possesses a lot of knowledge and believes that his actions are in the universe’s best interests, just like Tony. History could’ve repeated itself between both of Downey Jr.’s MCU characters.
Although it’s been confirmed now that Doctor Doom won’t have anything to do with Iron Man, Thanos’ Infinity War line can still be taken as foreshadowing. Even if the two characters aren’t related in any way, Thanos’ line still relates to Doom. The MCU’s Doctor Doom will likely be burdened with his own knowledge that will cause him to do what he believes is for the betterment of society. Tony Stark was dealt the same fate, but the difference will be their morals and how Doom inevitably chooses to use his knowledge in Avengers: Doomsday.
