How Old Wolverine Is In MCU & X-Men Movies
WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine.
Summary
- Wolverine has an advanced age due to his healing factor's side effects.
- Deadpool struggles to find a new Wolverine variant due to the original's death.
- The age of different Wolverine variants, like the Deadpool Wolverine, can vary.
Hugh Jackman reprises his iconic role of Wolverine in the MCU's Deadpool & Wolverine, with one line of dialogue referencing Logan’s advanced age. Along with his adamantium-coated claws, one of Wolverine’s most iconic mutant powers is his healing factor, which makes him nearly unkillable and allows him to shrug off a wide variety of attacks. This power has several side effects, including the extension of Wolverine’s lifespan, keeping him in his physical prime throughout his cinematic appearances. This includes Deadpool & Wolverine, during which multiple Wolverine variants appeared.
Wolverine’s healing factor significantly slows down his aging, with Logan – originally known as James Howlett – having been born in 1832, as established in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Since the original Fox X-Men trilogy takes place in the early and mid-2000s, Wolverine is well over 150 years old for much of the franchise. 2017’s Logan takes place in the distant future, whereas Deadpool & Wolverine utilizes a Wolverine variant from another timeline within the multiverse of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

6 Deadpool & Wolverine's Worst Wolverine Variant Says He's 200 Years Old Wolverine mentions he has been alive for 200 years Close Early on in Deadpool & Wolverine, Deadpool learns that he cannot bring the Wolverine of his timeline back following his death in Logan, so he travels to various universes, seeking other Wolverine variants to serve as his Marvel universe’s new anchor. The Wolverine he manages to capture suffers from the guilt of having failed to save his X-Men and is considered to be the “worst” Wolverine variant by the TVA. Despite this, he shares many key traits with other Wolverine variants, including, seemingly, their age range.
Deadpool & Wolverine establishes that an anchor is someone who the TVA considers the most important being in their respective reality.
During one of his many arguments with Deadpool, the “worst” Wolverine notes that he is 200 years old. Given that Wolverine’s powers keep him in his physical prime, it might be difficult to determine what his actual age is, but the Logan variant’s enraged dialogue indicates that he is around the same age as his counterpart in Deadpool’s universe. There is a slight discrepancy between the two, however.

If the Wolverine of Deadpool & Wolverine is actually 200, he is not fully aligned with the iteration from Deadpool’s reality, but he might have been simply rounding up for simplicity’s sake during his argument with Deadpool. Deadpool’s multiversal travels also may place him at different points on the timelines of the realities he visited, so he might have encountered this Wolverine variant in his universe’s 2032 in Deadpool & Wolverine.
It is also unclear how the film's timeline ties into Logan since Deadpool & Wolverine takes place in 2024, whereas Logan died in 2029. Assuming Deadpool's original timeline is the same as the one from Logan and all the post-X-Men: Days of Future Past films, it is strange how Deadpool talks about the events of Logan as if they have already happened. That said, the death of the anchor of Deadpool's universe was likely having a ripple effect that affected the past, present, and future at the same time.
Deadpool & Wolverine A follow-up to the highly successful Deadpool and Deadpool 2 films starring Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth. The third film will be the first in the franchise to be developed under the Marvel Studios banner following Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox.
