Why X-23 Has Lost Her Accent In Deadpool & Wolverine
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Deadpool & Wolverine.
Summary
- X-23 returns in Deadpool & Wolverine with a changed accent, explained by growing up in Canada since 2017's Logan.
- Deadpool & Wolverine sets up X-23's future in the MCU, potentially allowing her to join the Young Avengers team.
- Keen's X-23 could have future appearances in MCU thanks to the ending of Deadpool & Wolverine.
X-23 returns in Deadpool & Wolverine and may have a future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well, though viewers may be wondering what happened to her accent. The critically acclaimed 2017 film Logan was, for a time, considered the final performance of Hugh Jackman as the classic X-Men hero Wolverine, with the film introducing his female clone Laura (X-23) and ending with Logan’s demise. Jackman has since reprised his iconic role in the cast of Deadpool & Wolverine, as has Laura, though she has changed quite a bit since her debut in Logan.
The Void – a realm that the TVA uses for discarded variants – is the home of numerous characters from bygone Marvel movie franchises, leading to a range of exciting Deadpool & Wolverine cameos. One such character who returns to screens in the story is that of Dafne Keen’s X-23, who retains her history from Logan. Keen’s return as X-23 and her interactions with Wolverine are welcome additions to the films, yet some viewers may notice one change to Logan’s clone.
Along with X-23, The Void’s other discarded residents include Wesley Snipes’s Blade, Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, Channing Tatum’s Gambit, and Chris Evans’s Human Torch.

1 X-23 Lost Her Accent Because She's Been Living In Canada Since Logan X-23 no longer speaks with a Mexican accent in Deadpool & Wolverine. As shown in Logan, Laura was born and raised in a Transigen laboratory in Mexico, and while she does not speak for much of the film, her accent is quite prominent when she does. The absence of Laura’s accent in Deadpool & Wolverine is acknowledged by Dafne Keen in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, with Keen noting: “Laura has now been around a lot of English-speaking people, so she has a neutral accent every so often.”
The loss of X-23’s accent has a rather simple explanation, with Logan’s sacrifice allowing Laura and numerous other young mutants to escape Canada. Having grown up in Canada since the events of Logan, it makes sense that X-23 would lose her accent over time. Keen’s X-23 also seems poised for future appearances, thanks to the ending of Deadpool & Wolverine.
How Deadpool & Wolverine Sets Up X-23 To Join The Young Avengers While the fates of her teammates in the Void are left ambiguous, X-23 is shown to be alive and well – and living in Deadpool’s reality – at the end of Deadpool & Wolverine. This makes it possible for Keen to reprise her role in the MCU, perhaps as a member of the Young Avengers. The MCU has gradually introduced members of the Young Avengers and teased the team’s formation at the end of 2023’s The Marvels. With Deadpool & Wolverine seemingly making MCU crossovers possible – if not likely – Keen’s X-23 could find herself joining the team in a future film.
Deadpool & Wolverine A follow-up to the highly successful Deadpool and Deadpool 2 films starring Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth. The third film will be the first in the franchise to be developed under the Marvel Studios banner following Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox.
