Summary

  • The current state of the MCU is in crisis due to flops, behind-the-scenes chaos, and wavering reviews, making the return of significant characters like Iron Man possible.
  • Loki's newfound ability to control his time slipping power opens up the possibility for him to visit and recruit Tony Stark from a timeline where he is still alive and powerful.
  • If Marvel decides to bring back Iron Man, it could be through a reboot of the MCU, allowing old characters to return and old stories to be retold without much explanation.

The death of Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man was one of the most iconic and consequential moments of the MCU, but after bombshell reports of the MCU in crisis, it may be time to consider how he can return. The current state of the MCU is not ideal, with flops, behind-the-scenes chaos and wavering reviews threatening to burst the comic book movie bubble that it contributed the most to. This precarious position is one that conspicuously came almost immediately after the departure of three of the MCU's most significant characters, so it isn't too shocking to hear that Marvel is eyeing the possibility of their return.
That is according to a report by Variety which gives details of the MCU in a crisis. If true, the MCU is at least in a good position to retcon the departure of their biggest star, Robert Downey Jr., without it feeling too dissatisfying. The Multiverse saga, while still somewhat preoccupied with Thanos' legacy, has at least established myriad ways in which just about any character can make an MCU appearance or reappearance, from fleeting fan-cast payoffs to variants that are identical in every way to the original. Having Marvel bring Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man back into the fold, then, can be achieved pretty simply.
