“We’re Just Learning From Marvel”: Game Of Thrones Changed Spoiler Protections To Copy The MCU

Game of Thrones changed its spoiler protection protocols to copy Marvel, according to Emilia Clarke. The British actress starred in all eight seasons of HBO's wildly popular fantasy drama as Daenerys Targaryen, the exiled Princess with ambitions of conquering the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and reclaiming her father's Iron Throne. Clarke recently joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Secret Invasion, which premiered June 21 on Disney+, as the daughter of the Skrull leader Talos named G'iah.
During the Secret Invasion cast's appearance on EW's Around the Table series, Clarke discussed dealing with Marvel's intense security measures intended to prevent leaks. The Daenerys actress had prior experience with such prior to joining the MCU from the later seasons of Game of Thrones, which adopted massive spoiler protection inspired by Marvel. One major change, sharing scripts digitally, was difficult for Clarke and Tyrion Lannister actor Peter Dinklage who prefer to read their lines on paper. Read what Clarke shared below:

When we were doing Game of Thrones, when it started to get to the later seasons, some massive security changes happened. I was chatting with [showrunners] David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] and they were like, "Marvel. We're just learning from Marvel. Whatever Marvel's doing, we just want to do that." So that became, you don't print anything — and then there was like me and Peter Dinklage being like, "I need it on paper! I can't learn my lines without it being on paper!"

Game of Thrones Has Bigger Plans of Becoming Like The MCU Copying its spoiler protection protocols isn't the only way Game of Thrones is trying to become more like the MCU. In interviews, A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin has expressed his hopes for Game of Thrones to become a franchise like the MCU. What Martin means is that while Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon both focus on fights for the Iron Throne, he hopes there can be other spinoffs to showcase more offbeat stories and the overall history of his fantasy world.
