Fantastic Four The Thing Costume Criticisms Ignore The Point – He Won’t Look Like That

While most popular movies get some attention while filming, The Fantastic Four: First Steps has been especially targeted in terms of getting pictures and videos from the set, and not everyone is happy with what they've seen so far. The Marvel Cinematic Universe was long overdue for the moment when it would introduce Marvel's First Family, but when the project was announced in 2019, the excitement was off the charts. However, a global pandemic and other delays, the project was delayed multiple times.
Now, with the movie actively shooting, fans are more excited than ever to see the popular heroes join the MCU. This has resulted in a number of people leaking images from the set, with early designs, and characters being revealed in a rather unconventional way. And by extension, this means that the reveals are not always to be implicitly trusted, as there is a long road between this early footage and a finished edited movie, especially when it comes to a character like Ben Grimm as The Thing.

1 The Fantastic Four's Set Photo Appears To Reveal A Thing Set Stand In It's Closer To A Prop Than A Practical Suit Close The Thing is a man who is literally made out of orange stone. This is obviously not something which is easy to visualize, or capture on film without significant visual or practical effects to bring the character to life. And, looking at Marvel's track history and their success with creating realistic-looking characters who could not possibly exist in the real world, it would make sense for Marvel to do the same with The Thing. However, early footage and photos of The Thing on the set of The Fantastic Four reveal a full bodysuit in the likeness of the character.
While this could imply that the character will be made practically for the movie, it is much more likely, looking at the studios' track record, that this is simply a stand in on set. While some movies with fully CGI characters choose to use simple devices like a tennis ball on a stick as a reference for the other actors to interact with, Marvel has a history of recreating parts of the characters in order to help the cast and crew engage with characters like Ultron, Rocket Raccoon, and Thanos. With this in mind, it's very likely a stand in for The Thing in the leaks.

Why The Thing Will Likely Look Very Different To The MCU Set Photo Some Movie Magic Will Likely Result In A Very Different Thing Close When it comes time to animate The Thing, this large suit will be an enormous help for visual effects artists to examine how the texture and shape of the character may interact with their environment, but that is when the real work on creating The Thing will begin. The suit does not appear to have any moving parts around the face, and considering The Thing is a living rock, the character will need to be able to express themselves and speak.
The VFX artists would then create The Thing, as a living, breathing character who will only exist on the screen, but take reference and inspiration from the suit. Between now and the film's release in 2025, there is a lot of room for changes and updates to the characters to improve their ability to relay emotions, the authenticity of their being, while also making them into something that couldn't possibly exist in the real world. Thankfully, the building blocks are already in place, and the MCU has excelled in these areas before, so The Fantastic Four: First Steps is likely in very capable hands.
