Summary

  • Marvel characters with regional accents are hilariously recreated on TikTok by creator @koreanbeef27.
  • Captain America gets an East Coast accent, Spider-Man a New York twang, Thor a Nordic accent, and Wolverine a Canadian one.
  • Marvel should consider diversifying character accents for a more authentic representation and memorable characters.

A TikTok creator has bestowed a slew of Marvel movie characters with comics-accurate regional accents, and some are enough to make you cry with laughter. It is fair to say that Marvel movies aren't exactly the most multicultural (although the MCU is improving its diversity), with the vast majority of its superheroes hailing from somewhere in the United States. Still, the USA is a vast country that harbors a litany of regional dialects – something that was most recently highlighted by Channing Tatum's Gambit and his Cajun accent, which has since become a viral sensation.
TikTok creator @koreanbeef27 is riding the wave of that particular topic and hilariously conveyed what several other Marvel characters would sound like if their accents were accurate. The full clip can be viewed below.
He begins with Captain America sporting the transatlantic accent that would have been rife on the East Coast of America in the early 1900s. Spider-Man is then depicted with a broader and more modern New York twang. Both Thor and Wolverine, meanwhile, boast distinctly more Nordic and Canadian accents, respectively, which in this skit makes them appear significantly more approachable.

After Gambit, Marvel Should Make All Their Characters Have Correct Accents Close Despite hailing from all corners of the USA and beyond, Marvel movie heroes tend to speak in a standardized American accent. Several of the Avengers roster's New York-based contingent, for instance, don't express so much as a hint of a New York twang, despite at least two of them growing up there without the same privileges as the likes of Tony Stark. The reasons for avoiding accents may have something to do with making the characters more accessible – especially to a global audience – but Gambit proved the potential that Marvel is missing out on.
Blade was originally written as a British character in Marvel Comics.
Instead of being part of a homogenized group of Americans, variations on the accents of the Avengers and beyond would help to individualize them and make them as memorable as Gambit himself. Outside of Marvel, Harley Quinn is a prime example of how a thick accent can help to catapult the star power and inimitability of a single character in a group. The same can be said for Thor, whose Received Pronunciation English accent has always helped him to stand out significantly from his fellow Avengers.

Needless to say, going as heavy on the accent as Tatum's Gambit is an unwise move – but his near-unintelligible pronunciations in Deadpool & Wolverine were part of the bit. Instead, the MCU would benefit from delivering slight variations on the accents of its newer characters in order to help demarcate them in an ever-increasing roster of heroes. At the very least, it might make their characters more believably human.
