The Best Part About Channing Tatum"s Gambit In Deadpool & Wolverine Makes A Solo Movie Nearly Impossible

Summary

  • Channing Tatum's Gambit performance in Deadpool & Wolverine was praised, especially for his over-the-top accent.
  • However, his comedic accent may not work in a more serious Gambit solo movie.
  • Tatum is having talks with Marvel Studios to try to get his Gambit film made.

I loved Channing Tatum's Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, and even though I want him to get a solo movie, I think the best part about his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut makes that nearly impossible. Tatum has long wanted to play Gambit, making it his passion project. The actor could not give life to the character in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine due to scheduling conflicts, with Taylor Kitsch playing Gambit instead. Still, Tatum was formally cast as Remy LeBeau in 2014. Despite years of development, Tatum's Gambit movie would fall through.

I was very happy to see him appear as Gambit as one of Deadpool & Wolverine's surprise characters. He was an interesting hero to see as part of the Resistance, being the only character to debut rather than return from a previous Marvel live-action movie. Still, I think it worked out great, with Tatum's performance being so good that there is now a huge demand for him to appear in future MCU movies. That said, I think his best aspect might hurt Gambit's solo movie chances.

2 I Think Channing Tatum’s Gambit Accent Made His Performance Pop The Performance Has Gone Viral On Social Media Close Channing Tatum's Gambit is easily one of the most talked about characters of Deadpool & Wolverine. There are many reasons for that, with the actor finally getting his shot at the role after a decade of trying to get a Gambit movie made at the top of the list. Tatum's performance in the role met an overwhelmingly positive reception, with the character having a few exciting fight scenes and being the star of some of the movie's most hilarious moments. The latter was helped in great part due to Gambit's accent.
Gambit has become an internet sensation, with lines like "Wooimaboutomakeanameformyselfhere” going viral, which has only increased the demand for Tatum to return as Gambit.
Tatum went all in on the X-Men character's famous Cajun accent; however, Deadpool & Wolverine made it purposefully over the top to play it for jokes. The MCU movie had a lot of fun with Tatum's Gambit accent, with Deadpool pointing out to the audience that he could barely understand what he was saying. I think Gambit's accent is what made Tatum's Gambit performance pop amid many exciting characters in Deadpool & Wolverine's expansive all-star roster. Gambit has become an internet sensation, with lines like "Wooimaboutomakeanameformyselfhere” going viral, which has only increased the demand for Tatum to return as Gambit.

1 I Don’t Believe Gambit’s Deadpool & Wolverine Accent Would Work For An Entire Solo Movie This Version Of Gambit Would Lose His Defining Trait Close While Tatum's Gambit accent in Deadpool & Wolverine was the defining part of his performance, I have a hard time believing it could work for an entire solo movie. I think it worked out great for the character's role in the MCU movie, which was a supporting part for a section of the film. However, Gambit's accent was so over the top that were a solo movie for the mutant made with Tatum back, it would be unlikely for it to be as effective as it was in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Channing Tatum is talking to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige about his Gambit solo movie.
The reason for that is that Deadpool & Wolverine clearly made Gambit the comedic relief among the Resistance heroes, and were he to return in a solo film, I don't think Gambit's accent would work for an entire film with the character as the main focus. It would feel out of place in a more serious adaptation of Gambit, which is what Tatum ultimately seems to want to do with his long-gestating Gambit movie. Tatum's Gambit became a sensation due to his hilarious performance, and without the over-the-top accent, would he still be as popular?
Related Channing Tatum's Gambit Costume Explained In Detail: How It Compares To The Comics & Other Marvel Movies Deadpool & Wolverine finally brought Channing Tatum’s Gambit to life, with an especially thrilling costume that recalls Gambit’s comic book legacy.
I Want Channing Tatum Back As Gambit Even If He Loses His Accent The Actor Deserves To Finally Get His Gambit Movie Close I don't think Tatum's Gambit will keep his Deadpool & Wolverine accent if he returns for a solo movie, but I'd be more than willing to lose that key trait of his performance if it meant getting Tatum's dream project to come true. I believe Tatum has what it takes to bring Remy LeBeau's charming personality from Marvel Comics to life in a more serious project, still keeping his accurate suit from the hero's MCU debut. While a Cajun accent would be great, Tatum's passion for the character is ultimately more important and what makes his casting so good.
Besides, there is always a chance Marvel could choose to go for the best of both worlds. Tatum's Gambit could still keep his Deadpool & Wolverine accent but tone it down to a level that it does not become the defining trait of his performance. That way, Tatum's Gambit could be even more comic book-accurate in a possible solo movie, and I would love to see what that version of the character could look like.
