I"ve Worked Out The MCU"s Replacement For Star-Lord"s Infinity War Screw-Up In Phase 5

Summary

  • It's been argued that Star-Lord's mistakes in Avengers: Infinity War triggered "The Snap", leading to half of all life being erased.
  • Ant-Man's oversight in defeating Kang may have set a similar domino effect leading toward imminent multiverse collapse.
  • Despite changes to the specific threat (no longer Council of Kangs), the MCU's Multiverse Saga could still lead to imminent dangers in future Marvel films which only the Kang whom Ant-Man defeated could have stopped.

Everyone got mad during the MCU's Phase 3 with Star-Lord for losing his cool in Avengers: Infinity War, and I'm pretty sure I've figured out who's already committed the big screw-up of Marvel's Phase 5. As seen in 2018's Infinity War, it's been argued that Star-Lord's actions were inadvertently responsible for The Snap and half of all life being erased from existence. In the same vein, another Avenger may have triggered the imminent dangers that are most likely coming by the end of the current Multiverse Saga.
The MCU's Multiverse Saga began with Phase 4 and is set to end with Phase 6. While there have been some significant changes regarding this current saga's overarching plots and villains, the threat of eventual multiversal collapse is likely still intact as the MCU gets ever closer to Avengers: Doomsday releasing in 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. To that end, I believe Scott Lang's Ant-Man has already set things in motion through one big oversight, much like Star-Lord's mistake with Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War.

2 Many MCU Fans Have Blamed Star-Lord For Thanos And The Snap The Gauntlet Could Have Been Taken From Thanos In Avengers: Infinity War, it's been argued that the core reason Thanos won and collected all the Infinity Stones was because of Peter Quill's Star-Lord. On the remains of Titan, Star-Lord, Drax, and Mantis joined forces with Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange to intercept Thanos and stop him before he could make his way to Earth and the Mind Stone (Nebula would join mid-battle as well). Working together, this team of heroes successfully had Thanos incapacitated, and Iron Man and Spider-Man were mere moments away from removing the Infinity Gauntlet from Thanos' grasp.
However, the revelation that Thanos had had to kill Gamora to claim the Soul Stone sent Quill into a rage. Striking the Mad Titan repeatedly, Mantis lost control of Thanos as Quill continued hitting him. This allowed Thanos to keep hold of the gauntlet and defeat the heroes, taking the Time Stone from Doctor Strange before leaving for Earth to collect the final stone from Vision. As such, a good chunk of the blame for Thanos' victory has been placed on Star-Lord by fans who believed Star-Lord should have found a different way to process his grief.
Ant-Man's Defeat Of Kang Could Be Similar For The Multiverse Saga "Is Everyone Going To Die Because of Me?" Eventually, I believe Scott Lang's Ant-Man will eventually find himself in a similarly unenviable position of blame sooner rather than later. Having defeated the exiled Kang the Conqueror with help from his family in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Scott Lang is seen briefly panicking about whether they all did the right thing by defeating the exiled Kang variant in the Quantum Realm. Asking himself if everyone was going to die because of him, Scott remembers that Kang had said that something bad was coming, having hinted at the imminent collapse of the multiverse if he wasn't there to stop it.
Ultimately, Lang shrugs off the panic, choosing to ignore the potential danger with the belief that "everything is probably fine". On the one hand, one could argue that Quantumania's ending and Lang's feelings are even funnier now that Marvel Studios has decided to pivot away from Kang and actor Jonathan Majors whom they've since cut ties. However, Lang could still end up being blamed for his negligence and not thinking things all the way through, given that multiversal collapse is likely to still happen by the end of the Multiverse Saga.
The MCU's Future Is Different Now, But Ant-Man Still Likely Triggered A Domino Effect Multiversal Collapse Is Likely Still Coming Close Even if the Majors and the Council of Kangs are no longer the main threat that's on the way, Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom and more potential dangers to the stability of the multiverse could still be something that the exiled Kang perhaps could have stopped, had Lang not defeated him in the Quantum Realm. For all his flaws and desire to conquer, Marvel Studios could end up revealing that Kang had the best chance at saving all the various realities (a smart way of keeping him off-screen and yet not fully ignoring his character altogether). However, it would mean that Ant-Man helped start the domino effect toward multiversal collapse.
