Summary

  • Channing Tatum finally debuted as a live-action Gambit in the MCU's Deadpool & Wolverine, and I want more.
  • Channing Tatum is reportedly in talks to portray Gambit in a solo MCU movie, which I think would work as the first project in the MCU's speculated "Mutant Saga."
  • Gambit's return to the MCU presents the opportunity to create clear continuity, while also having the chance to introduce other notable mutants to the franchise, including Rogue, Mister Sinister and even Wolverine himself.

Following his recent debut in the MCU, I would love to see Channing Tatum return for a solo Gambit movie, perhaps as the first project in Marvel Studios' speculated "Mutant Saga." After years of vying for the role of the Cajun Remy LeBeau, Channing Tatum finally made his live-action debut as Marvel's Gambit in 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine. His performance has been met with huge praise, having contributed to some of the movie's most entertaining and memorable moments, so I would be disappointed to see it end so soon.
Thanks to his chequered past as a villain-turned-hero, Gambit is one of Marvel's most complex and popular mutant characters, so I loved seeing a faithful adaptation of the hardened fighter in Deadpool & Wolverine. Channing Tatum originally auditioned for the role of Gambit for 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand, and has spent almost two decades since trying to bring the character to life. Now that we've had a taste, I want more, so I would love to see Channing Tatum return as Gambit to spearhead the MCU's possible "Mutant Saga."
Channing Tatum Is Speaking To Marvel About A Solo Gambit Movie I Would Love To See Channing Tatum Return As Gambit After Deadpool & Wolverine Following the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, speculation has emerged that Channing Tatum could lead a solo MCU movie as Gambit. This was even supported by Tatum himself, who revealed in an interview with Screen Rant that he is "talking to Kevin [Feige]" regarding a possible return as the mutant. Hoping to "will it into existence," Channing Tatum is evidently very up for coming back, and I think his possible solo MCU movie would make for a strong start for the "Mutant Saga", which has been rumored to follow Marvel Studios' current Multiverse Saga.

I’m not going to bore everybody with what we were trying to do with our [Gambit] film, but it was an origin story that we were doing. We were trying to make something that actually would be in the world and could play with Deadpool. You put Deadpool in a lot of scenes with other MCU characters, and he could possibly just make fun of them the entire time. But he wouldn’t, because Ryan loves comics and he loves Marvel.
I would do pretty much any version of Gambit, to be honest. I think we will, hopefully. At least I’m talking to Kevin, and I just want to be in any MCU stuff. To get to dress up again as him would be enough. I felt like [Deadpool & Wolverine] was truly a make-a-wish sort of thing that my friend did for me. It was like, “Come in, and I’ll let you dress up as your favorite superhero character.” I was having an out-of-body experience just standing next to Hugh. It was like, “Oh, my God, there’s Wolverine. There’s Blade! Elektra – everyone’s here, this is wild.”
Your mouth to God’s ears, friend. Help me will it into existence.

Gambit Deserves A Solo Movie After Constant Fox X-Men Franchise Snubs Channing Tatum's Gambit Has Been Snubbed By Fox For Almost Two Decades Since his Marvel Comics debut in 1990's The Uncanny X-Men Annual #14, Gambit has been considered to be one of the best mutant characters in the Marvel Universe. Despite his huge popularity, 20th Century Fox never managed to integrate Gambit properly into its two-decade-long X-Men franchise. As I previously stated, Channing Tatum first auditioned for Gambit when the character was featured in an early draft of X-Men: The Last Stand, but he was ultimately cut, and due to Tatum's unavailability, Taylor Kitsch portrayed Gambit in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine instead.
Related Marvel Finally Did An Overlooked X-Men Character Justice After 15 Years Of Live-Action Disappointment Marvel Studios" X-Men "97 continues to deliver, and the animated series has shown more respect for a mutant than the Fox X-Men movies ever did.
Back in 2014, X-Men producer Lauren Schuler Donner revealed to Total Film (via The Hollywood Reporter) that Channing Tatum would appear as Gambit in 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse, which would then be followed by a solo Gambit movie. This project went through a series of rewrites and several directors before officially being shelved amid Disney's acquisition of Fox in 2019. I found it incredibly satisfying to finally see Channing Tatum suit up as Gambit after years of being snubbed, and this has me thinking he deserves a solo MCU movie more than most other upcoming mutant heroes.
Bringing Channing Tatum’s Gambit Back In The Mutant Saga Creates Continuity In The MCU Marvel Studios May Focus Mostly On The X-Men After The Multiverse Saga Ends As Marvel Studios is expected to shift its focus away from the Avengers after the Multiverse Saga's conclusion, and onto new mutant characters and the X-Men, it's possible that a sense of continuity could be lost. This is especially true if every mutant hero that audiences have grown to love over the last 24 years is recast, but I reckon Channing Tatum's return as Gambit could be an easy solution to this problem. Tatum has already appeared as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, so bringing him back would establish a connection to the MCU's past.
Gambit was teased to return to the MCU in Deadpool & Wolverine's post-credits scene, as he was seen on a screen in the Time Variance Authority still wandering around the Void.
Channing Tatum has also been a fan-favorite casting for Gambit for several years, which made his debut in Deadpool & Wolverine even more satisfying. His first appearance in live-action has only increased hopes that he'll return. This likely means that any solo movie featuring Channing Tatum's Gambit in the MCU's future would practically have guaranteed viewership and success. All told, this would make for a very strong start for the "Mutant Saga," so shouldn't be overlooked by Marvel Studios.
Gambit’s Solo MCU Movie Can Debut Other Notable X-Men Characters Gambit Has Connections To Many Heroes & Villains In Marvel Comics Close While some have expressed doubt that Gambit is a strong enough character to lead a solo movie, I don't share these concerns, especially given his connections to a wide range of other heroes and villains in Marvel Comics. Featuring a Gambit movie as the first in the "Mutant Saga" would present the perfect opportunity to introduce other notable characters. Perhaps most specifically, Gambit's long-running, on-again, off-again romance with Rogue could be set up in this movie, bringing a more comic-accurate depiction of the mutant into live-action following Anna Paquin's divisive iteration.
His history as a villain-come-antihero also saw him work for formidable X-Men villain Mister Sinister.
As well as Rogue, Gambit also formed a close friendship with X-Men member Storm, helping her to defeat the Shadow King while she was depowered. His history as a villain-come-antihero also saw him work for formidable X-Men villain Mister Sinister, and lead the Marauders, a group of morally-questionable mercenaries. Gambit also witnessed Wolverine's escape from the Weapon X facility, so I think a solo Gambit movie in the MCU's "Mutant Saga" could lay the seeds for some of Marvel's biggest mutant-centric storylines.
