Deadpool & Wolverine featured quite a few major surprise heroes, with Chris Evans' Johnny Storm being the biggest, and I had multiple issues with what the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie did with the character. I understand that the 2000s Fantastic Four films are not the pinnacle of the superhero medium; however, I am quite fond of them. I loved the two Fantastic Four movies growing up, and to this day, while I can see their faults more clearly, I continue to have a lot of fun with them. Johnny Storm being among Deadpool & Wolverine's cameos had me very excited.
Evans has made a name for himself as Captain America in the MCU — my favorite hero in the franchise. The actor's Steve Rogers and Johnny Storm are very different, with Deadpool & Wolverine's R-rated Human Torch dialogue making those differences even more clear. Due to his time in the Fantastic Four movies and huge role in the MCU, Evans coming back in Deadpool & Wolverine was the movie's biggest surprise and one I loved to discover. However, even though it led to Deadpool & Wolverine's hilarious post-credits scene, I had quite a few issues with Johnny Storm in the movie.

2 I Thought Chris Evans' Johnny Storm Was Almost Unrecognizable In Deadpool & Wolverine The MCU Changed Him A Lot Close There was quite a curious element to Evans' Human Torch. I thought that it was easy to tell that Jennifer Garner's Elektra and Wesley Snipes' Blade, two of the other members of the Void's Resistance against Cassandra Nova, were the same from their respective movies, even though it wasn't explicitly stated. Dafne Keen's X-23 was also very clearly the same one audiences fell in love with in 2017's Logan. However, Chris Evans' Johnny Storm was extremely different from the last time he was seen in 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
First is the hero's Fantastic Four costume, which is very different from the one he used to wear, with a centralized logo, extra lines, and pants/boots that didn't match — though the latter could have been scavenged in the Void. However, the most confusing aspect of the cameo is Evans' Boston accent. In the two Fantastic Four movies, Johnny never spoke with such an accent, and so that made his Deadpool & Wolverine performance quite jarring in comparison. The R-rated nature of his dialogue, while funny, also contributed to my feeling this Johnny Storm was unrecognizable and not quite right.

1 I Didn't Like Johnny Storm's Death In Deadpool & Wolverine Him Getting Captured Also Made No Sense Close I believe that, even with the MCU's Fantastic Four casting, Chris Evans as Johnny Storm remains the best casting decision ever for the Fantastic Four in live-action. If it was truly the Human Torch from the 2000s Fantastic Four movies that appeared in Deadpool & Wolverine, then his death was extremely underwhelming. While the films don't come close to the MCU's best offerings, they were still fun adventures for fans of the team and helped many get invested in Marvel heroes, so Johnny getting his skin unceremoniously ripped off by Cassandra Nova and dying was awful to witness.
Before his death, I already had a problem with the way Johnny Storm was captured. We are to believe that after being a superhero for around 20 years, Evans' Human Torch, who has undoubtedly fought several threats with the Fantastic Four by now, was so easily defeated by Pyro. That makes no sense. Sure, Pyro could offer him a dangerous opponent, but Johnny Storm's powers should have proven too strong for the fire-based villain to tame. Deadpool & Wolverine did the opposite, with Pyro extinguishing the Human Torch's flames, something he can't do in the comics, which I disliked.

1 I Want Chris Evans' Human Torch To Return In The MCU There Is A Perfect Way For Marvel To Do It Close Based on how different Evans' Johnny Storm looked and behaved in Deadpool & Wolverine when compared to the 2000s Fantastic Four movies, I think Marvel has the perfect opportunity to use the character again. Evans could come back as his original Human Torch, revealing the foul-mouthed hero from Deadpool & Wolverine was a variant. That would allow Evans to play a more faithful version of his Human Torch in one or both of the upcoming Avengers movies. The films will also use the multiverse, so a Johnny Storm return could very well happen.

10 That would also make something I want to see in the Avengers movies possible. The films could be the last opportunity to get the 2000s Fantastic Four cast back together as their characters onscreen, and if Evans' Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine were a variant, then Marvel could have the original Fantastic Four team up with the MCU's new version of the team. This would allow the whole team to have one last mission together, which is something that I would love to see and would put my Deadpool & Wolverine Human Torch issues to rest.
