One rumored villain for Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four project in Phase 6 could create the opportunity for Marvel Studios to pay off a decade-old villain team set-up in the MCU. Over the years, Marvel Studios has teased adaptations of some of Marvel Comics' biggest storylines, but many of these set-ups have seen no resolution. While many of the MCU's recent teases may take years to be paid off, including Harry Styles' debut as Eros, Hercules' appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder and the Celestial Tiamut's emergence in Eternals, the MCU has the perfect opportunity to resolve one huge tease that was first hinted at in 2013's Thor: The Dark World.
Following recent rumors of an MCU reboot after Avengers: Secret Wars, Marvel Studios may be running out of time to resolve several unfinished storylines. One upcoming Phase 6 project could provide the best chance to tie up one long-running MCU tease, however, as Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four reboot is rumored to be introducing a major Marvel Comics villain into live-action who could act as the catalyst of a huge villain group's formation. This could mark the MCU debut of one of Marvel Comics' most powerful teams, many members of which have already been introduced to the ever-growing franchise over the last ten years.
Related Every Superhero Team The MCU Is Setting Up In Phase 4 The MCU is expanding like never before, and seems to be setting up several new superhero (and supervillain) teams for its next phases. Marvel Studios Has Introduced Several Elders Of The Universe Close Since the post-credits scenes of 2013's Thor: The Dark World, Marvel Studios has introduced several members of the Elders of the Universe into the MCU. In Marvel Comics, the Elders of the Universe are a group of supervillains comprised of the last surviving members of each of their species' who have lived for billions of years. Each has a personal obsession, and tap into the Power Primordial to enhance their gifts and elongate their lives. Marvel Comics' Elders of the Universe has, at one time or another, featured over twenty of these supremely-powerful characters, and while Marvel Studios has only debuted three, the team could still be forming soon.
The first Elder of the Universe seen in both Marvel Comics and in the MCU was the Collector, a.k.a. Taneleer Tivan. Benicio Del Toro's Collector had dealings with Asgardians and the Guardians of the Galaxy in the MCU, while Thor later came into contact with Jeff Goldblum's Grandmaster, another member of the Elders of the Universe. In Marvel Comics, Ego the Living Planet was also featured as an Elder of the Universe, and while his MCU backstory transformed him into the Celestial father of Peter Quill's Star-Lord, Ego could also take a spot on the MCU's Elders of the Universe, which may debut in an upcoming MCU Phase 6 project.
The Elders Of The Universe Fought Galactus & The Silver Surfer In Marvel Comics During one major Marvel Comics storyline, a group of eleven Elders of the Universe band together in an effort to bring down the planet-eater Galactus, who has been threatening the stability of the universe. Considering themselves immortal, the Elders believed they were the only ones who'd survive a battle with Galactus, but they were thwarted by Galactus' Heralds, the Silver Surfer and Nova. This led to five Elders being consumed, while three others found themselves trapped in another reality. These Elders employ the help of the otherworldly In-Betweener to defeat Galactus, and during the battle, the five Elders inside Galactus use the Infinity Gems to transport themselves to safety.
The five Elders of the Universe consumed by Galactus in Marvel Comics comprise the Collector, the Grandmaster, Tryco Slatterus' Champion, Ord Zyonz's Gardener and Gilpetperdon's Runner, while Seginn Gallio's Astronomer, Kamo Tharnn's Possessor and Cort Zo Tinnus' Trader were thrust through a black hole into another universe.
This storyline could prove crucial to the MCU's introduction of the Elders of the Universe, as their epic battle against Galactus may be demonstrated in Marvel Studios' upcoming Fantastic Four. Galactus and the Silver Surfer have been rumored to be appearing in Fantastic Four, with recent rumors suggesting that Javier Bardem may be cast in the role of the iconic and formidable supervillain. While Marvel Studios is yet to officially announce Galactus' involvement in the MCU's Phase 6, the villain's debut in Fantastic Four could explain the formation of the Elders of the Universe after a decade of teasing, and one upcoming MCU Disney+ series may also reinforce this idea.
What If…? Season 2 Could Hint At The MCU’s Elders Of The Universe Stories Marvel Studios' What If…? season 2 is set to premiere on December 22, 2023, and while the animated series explores alternate realities adjacent to the main MCU continuity, it could have some impact on the live-action franchise. Jeff Goldblum has been confirmed to be reprising his role of the Grandmaster in What If…? season 2, and this could set up the formation of the Elders of the Universe. After What If…? season 1, Hayley Atwell's Captain Carter made her live-action debut in the MCU's Phase 4, so the same could take place for the Elders of the Universe prior to their potential larger role in Phase 6's Fantastic Four project.
