2023 was a heartbreaking year for the MCU, filled with shocking character deaths, mass scale tragedies, and harrowing sacrifices. A consistent theme across the three films and two Disney+ shows that premiered was characters coming face to face with elements from their past, often with tragic consequences. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, for example, the Guardians are forced to learn Rocket's tear-jerking origins and confront his past demons to save his life. In Secret Invasion, Nick Fury learns firsthand how his failure to uphold a promise will have deadly consequences. Similarly, in The Marvels, Captain Marvel tries to escape a past regret, only for it to return with great force.
Adding on to these past tragedies are the ambiguous futures that many characters are left in. Multiple heroes are forced to make great sacrifices that leave their futures in the MCU timeline uncertain, even if they remain alive at the end of their projects. Even when characters seem safe at the end of their projects, the threat of intergalactic war and an unstable multiverse still looms over their heads, making their futures seem all the more grim, and making their endings that much more heartbreaking.
