Why Iron Man’s First Real MCU Armor Isn’t What You Think

Summary

  • Tony Stark's first Iron Man suit, the Mark I, is a hulking body of armor made from metal scraps that he built to escape a terrorist organization.
  • The Mark III suit, which is the most iconic and familiar design, was actually the first design in the real world, with Mark I and Mark II reverse-engineered to resemble earlier versions of Mark III.
  • The designers wanted Mark III to have a memorable design as it would become the suit audiences associate with Iron Man, and the subsequent suits in the MCU were inspired by its design.

One of the most riveting parts of watching Iron Man's origins in his first movie is seeing how his iconic suit came to be. The sleek red and yellow design he dons in his later MCU appearances is iconic, but that's not where his suits began. Tony's first suit design is a large, hulking body of armor made out of metal scraps he obtains as a captive. Considering the fact that he built the suit to escape a terrorist organization, not become a hero, it serves him well.
While comparatively less impressive than Tony's later Iron Man suits, this suit, later dubbed the "Mark I," is arguably the most important as it demonstrates just how ingenious of an inventor Tony really is and how he responds to dangerous situations. When he returns home, he continues engineering, refining the suit to achieve the “Mark III” mode. It's this suit that he wears for most of the movie and inspires his suits in the rest of the Iron Man movies. However, while it may be easy to assume that the Mark I is Tony’s first MCU suit, that isn't technically the case.
