7 Superpowers Wolverine Still Hasn"t Used 23 Years After Hugh Jackman First Donned The Claws

Summary

  • Wolverine's enhanced taste buds have yet to be explored in the movies, but they could be useful in detecting poison or other substances.
  • Wolverine's enhanced sense of touch has also not been shown on-screen, but it could be used in scenes involving detective work.
  • Wolverine's ability to live for an extended period has allowed him to acquire various skills, which could be showcased in future appearances, such as Deadpool 3.

After 23 years, it's safe to say that Hugh Jackman is the longest-serving actor to portray any one superhero on-screen, yet despite his legendary tenure there are still some superpowers that Wolverine has yet to use. Despite Logan appearing to be a swansong for Jackman's Wolverine, he is being dragged into the MCU by Deadpool. Details on Wolverine's involvement in Deadpool 3 are scarce, with most of the hype surrounding his comic-accurate attire depicted in the bombshell teaser poster. But Wolverine's appearance in the movie does afford him the opportunity to use some of the lesser-known powers that he has in the comics.
Beyond what could happen in Deadpool 3, however, there is the version Wolverine that will no doubt appear in the MCU's much-anticipated version of the X-Men post-Multiverse Saga. The MCU will no doubt have carte blanche when exploring this version of Wolverine, meaning every one of his powers are back on the table. Of all Wolverine's powers demonstrated in the comics, there aren't many that Fox hasn't already explored in some capacity and some that will probably remain unexplored for pretty good reasons.

He was even privy to the conversations happening in his surroundings while submerged in Stryker's revamped Weapon X facility. One sense he has yet to find a use for, however, is his enhanced taste. Wolverine seems to be anything but a foodie, but he could rub shoulders with the finest critics if he so desired.
Short of being a superpower played off for laughs – which is certainly a possibility in Deadpool 3 – there are some useful applications to this ability. Detecting poison, for instance, is one – though anyone looking to poison Wolverine or Deadpool clearly isn't familiar with the two's healing factors. It is unlikely that his taste buds will enjoy any time in the limelight in a future appearance for this reason, save for an offhand mention.
6 Wolverine Has Enhanced Touch Another of Wolverine's unexplored super senses is his enhanced sense of touch. Put simply, Wolverine can detect the most minuscule of details on any surface by touching it. While not the most exciting of powers, it's possible to see this rolled out in any scene that might involve some detective work. Along with his other heightened senses, it is something that Wolverine shares with Daredevil – another character likely to survive the MCU's soft reboot, though Wolverine's super-touch is probably outmatched by Murdock's.
5 Wolverine Is Resistant To Mystical Curses In his comic book adventures, Wolverine has been subjected to both lycanthropy and vampirism after being bitten by carriers of each. While this did turn him into a werewolf and vampire, respectively (and particularly fearsome ones, to say the least), his immense healing factor was able to give both a shelf-life. Lesser beings, meanwhile, can expect a lifetime (or eternity) of affliction, save for some mystical hoop-jumping to rid themselves of it.
Unfortunately, were-wolverine probably isn't on the cards any time soon. The MCU is no stranger to mysticism, and it has even recently introduced its own werewolf in Werewolf by Night. The likelihood of Jack Russell and Logan crossing paths, however, is not all that likely, while it is also unlikely that Deadpool 3 will bog down its anticipated foray with Fox's X-Men by introducing werewolves and vampires into the mix. While it would probably be very well received, a tongue-in-cheek reference to Morbius, a character who Sony is still hoping to incorporate fully into their own Spider-Man Universe, is also unlikely.
4 Wolverine Will Have Acquired Many Skills Through His Long Life The ability to live for an inordinate amount of time due to a slow aging process has many benefits. For one, it offers some of the benefits of immortality without the soul-crushing concept of infinity bearing down at all times. For another, it means that skills can be honed to an unmatched degree – which is something that Wolverine has used to great effect in the comics. One such demonstration of this is Wolverine's ability to wield weapons and tussle with the best of fighters owing to his many years of fighting in close quarters, but there are other skills that Wolverine has yet to deploy on-screen.
This is the kind of thing that could easily be worked into a future appearance. It won't be hard for Wolverine to explain away his ability to do just about anything that requires years of practice in Deadpool 3 or any other future appearance. It certainly won't take up much screen time like other abilities on this list might, but if Wolverine becomes a master pilot during a moment that requires it, it's unlikely to be scrutinized too heavily.
3 Wolverine Could Turn Feral An interesting effect granted by Wolverine's Adamantium skeleton was its unforeseen ability to stave off Wolverine's transformation into something more bestial, or, at least, more bestial than usual. After having the Adamantium in his skeleton removed by Magneto in one of the most gruesome scenes in the comics, Wolverine began to experience a slow transformation into his most beast-like self. This resulted in him losing much of his humanity, turning him feral and particularly dangerous to anyone in his vicinity.
Wolverine's bone claws have been seen before in the X-Men franchise, but they didn't consume his very nature before his skeleton was turned to Adamantium. It is possible that Wolverine could find himself subjected to the same torturous circumstances at the hands of Magneto in future movies, and if so, it could end up turning him into an enemy akin to what has been seen with the Hulk. Wolverine's berserker rage is known for getting him out of some serious scrapes – but a raging Wolverine that is completely out of control is a particularly terrifying notion.
2 Wolverine Could Host The Phoenix Force While the Phoenix Force has made a couple of appearances in the X-Men franchise, it has so far been confined to Jean Grey. The immensely powerful psychic entity has also taken over Wolverine in the comics, however, bestowing on him cosmic powers centered around unstoppable flames, in particular. More terrifying, however, is a Wolverine capable of ending entire worlds.
